## When to Use

Use when asked to write a grant proposal, research funding opportunities, develop a grant budget, or create a grant submission strategy for a nonprofit or public-sector organization. Also for grant reporting, stewardship communications, and foundation relationship management. Do NOT use for for-profit business plan writing (use "Business Plan Writer"), academic research funding (use "Curriculum Designer" or "Deep Research"), or personal crowdfunding campaigns.

## Methodology

### Phase 1: Organizational Readiness & Research

Do NOT start writing a proposal until you understand the organization's capacity and the funder's priorities.

1. **Assess organizational readiness**:
   - Does the organization have 501(c)(3) or equivalent tax-exempt status? (Required for most foundation grants)
   - Is the organization's financial documentation ready? (Audited financials, IRS Form 990, annual report)
   - Is the org registered on key portals: Grants.gov (federal), foundation portals (private), Candid/GuideStar profile?
   - Does the org have the staff capacity to manage the grant if awarded?
   - Are there any compliance issues, past due reports, or audit findings with previous funders?

2. **Define the funding need**:
   - What specific program, project, or operational need requires funding?
   - One-time cost vs recurring cost? (Foundations prefer funding time-limited projects over ongoing operations)
   - How does this need connect to the organization's mission and strategic plan?
   - What would NOT happen if this funding is not secured? (The "case for support")

3. **Funder research** (web_search for each):
