(Required for most foundation grants) - Is the organization's financial documentation ready? (Audited financials, IRS Form 990, annual report) - Is the org registered on key portals: Grants.gov (federal), foundation portals (private), Candid/GuideStar profile? - Does the org have the staff capacity to manage the grant if awarded? - Are there any compliance issues, past due reports, or audit findings with previous funders? 2. **Define the funding need**: - What specific program, project, or operational need requires funding? - One-time cost vs recurring cost? (Foundations prefer funding time-limited projects over ongoing operations) - How does this need connect to the organization's mission and strategic plan? - What would NOT happen if this funding is not secured?
